Cervical cancer elimination in Romania: Translating political commitment into action

Cervical cancer remains one of the most preventable cancers, yet it continues to place a significant burden on women in Romania. While the country has historically faced high incidence and mortality rates, recent progress in HPV vaccination policy and the adoption of a national screening methodology aligned with EU guidelines signal a critical turning point.

This report presents a clear, evidence-based roadmap to help Romania move from fragmented efforts to coordinated national action — strengthening system capacity, expanding organized screening, and ensuring equitable access to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment — to accelerate progress toward eliminating cervical cancer and reducing HPV-related cancers across the population.

The report was launched in Bucharest, Romania on April 29,2026.
