Precision medicine

New methods, technologies and treatments are enabling more personalised care for patients with cancer, rare conditions and other serious diseases. Based on a patient’s individual genetic profile and lifestyle factors, treatment selection, dosing, follow-up and risk-reducing interventions can be optimised to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Precision medicine offers significant opportunities for both patients and healthcare systems but may also present new challenges for the organisation and financing of healthcare. Limited clinical evidence for many advanced methods and treatments creates uncertainty around clinical effectiveness, long-term outcomes, costs and value, making decisions about their implementation, use and follow-up more challenging.

At IHE, we are at the forefront of developing and applying health economic methods to assess and communicate the value of precision medicine. Our work includes collaborations with pharmaceutical and medical technology companies, participation in major European research projects, and involvement in the national Genomic Medicine Sweden initiative, which aims to introduce large-scale genomics-based diagnostics in Sweden. IHE’s Oskar Frisell leads its health economics working group.
