Diabetes

IHE is one of the world’s leading research groups in the economic evaluation of diabetes. Our work covers analyses of costs, health outcomes, and cost-effectiveness of a wide range of interventions in diabetes, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and lifestyle modifications. We also conduct extensive registry-based research addressing various aspects of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. To date, IHE has produced more than 50 publications in the field, contributing to evidence-based decision-making in diabetes care and policy.

For nearly 30 years, IHE has developed advanced economic models to simulate the progression of diabetes. These models have been widely used in submissions to health technology assessment (HTA) bodies worldwide, to support early decision making and budget impact analyses, as well as to support the development of national treatment guidelines.

IHE has developed two primary model platforms:

The IHE Diabetes Cohort Model (IHE-DCM)

A cohort-level cost-effectiveness model designed for the long-term evaluation of interventions in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. IHE-DCM is built to be transparent, efficient, and user-friendly, and can be licensed by clients who wish to independently set up and conduct analyses.

The Economic and Health Outcomes Model for Diabetes Mellitus (ECHO)

A comprehensive microsimulation model platform developed to assess long-term clinical and economic outcomes of interventions in diabetes care, both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as for weight management and pre-diabetes. The models are designed for maximum flexibility, supporting early decision-making and enabling analysis across a wide range of public health research questions.

IHE has also developed a full model for diabetes kidney disease.
