Obesity and Surgical Treatment – A Cost-Effectiveness Assessment for Sweden

Obesity is an increasing concern in many countries. This study assesses the cost-effectiveness of gastric bypass surgical treatments for obesity in adult patients, in comparison with conventional non-surgical treatment such as diet and exercise, in Sweden. The treatment outcomes were evaluated from a societal perspective and for a lifetime time horizon, using a patient level model simulation. It was shown that the incremental cost associated with gastric bypass decreases with BMI while it increases with the patient’s age and is higher in women than in men. Overall, gastric bypass surgery was shown to be a cost-effective intervention.
